CASE STUDY · THE NETHERLANDS
Green Create Wijster: 100% chicken manure to biomethane.
One of Europe’s largest biomethane plants, running on 100% poultry (chicken) manure. Engineered, built and operated by our team, and supported by Cirvanta today.
The challenge
Chicken and other poultry manure is one of the hardest feedstocks to digest: high nitrogen and ammonia inhibit the biology, and grit and feathers wear equipment. Most anaerobic digestion plants dilute it with other feedstocks; Wijster was designed to run on 100% poultry manure at very large scale.
Our solution
Our team designed a process around ammonia management, with ammonia stripping that recovers ammonium sulphate, robust feedstock reception and grit handling, biogas upgrading with grid injection, and a drying and pelletising line that turns solid digestate into fertiliser for sale.
The result
The plant has injected biomethane into the Dutch grid since 2022. It was acquired by an institutional investor in 2024, and Cirvanta continues to support its operations with process and biological monitoring.
